Every Sunday, we take a quick snapshot of the mysterious world around us and bring it, in an easily readable magazine format, to the board. Actual Dinosaur Tail Found Preserved in Amber
The unprecedented 99 million-year-old specimen contains preserved bones, soft tissues and feathers. The incredible discovery, which is being hailed as a world first, has provided scientists with a unique opportunity to study – not just a fossil – but an actual piece of dinosaur, frozen in time.
The apricot-sized specimen, which was found in an amber mine in north-eastern Myanmar, contains the perfectly preserved tail of a juvenile coelurosaur – a type a therapod dinosaur. Scans of the amber indicate the presence of eight vertebrae from the tail’s mid-section along with several delicate feathers which have been described as brown on the top and white underneath.
“This is the first time we’ve found dinosaur material preserved in amber,” said study co-author Ryan McKellar of the Royal Saskatchewan Museum in Canada. “We can be sure of the source because the vertebrae are not fused into a rod or pygostyle as in modern birds and their closest relatives. Instead, the tail is long and flexible, with keels of feathers running down each side.”
The remarkable discovery is undoubtedly one the most significant palaentological finds in years.
“It’s amazing to see all the details of a dinosaur tail – the bones, flesh, skin, and feathers – and to imagine how this little fellow got his tail caught in the resin, and then presumably died because he could not wrestle free,” said study co-author Professor Mike Benton from the University of Bristol.

Steely-Eyed Missile Man John Glenn Passes Away
Born in 1921 in eastern Ohio, Glenn’s passion for flying manifested at an early age via his childhood obsession with airplanes. He earned his private pilot’s license in 1941 during his time studying physics and engineering at Muskingum College. A decorated combat pilot who quit college to enlist in the military after Pearl Harbor, Glenn earned several medals for his service in the Korean war. Later becoming an officer in the United States Marine Corps, Glenn became a test pilot who helped develop the US Navy’s F8U Crusader, and was recruited by NASA as one of the legendary Mercury Seven – America’s first astronauts.
Glenn became a national hero in 1962 when he became the first American to orbit the Earth on the Friendship 7 mission, one year after the Soviet Union had sent their own man into orbit, Yuri Gagarin. Glenn was the third US astronaut in space and the first American in orbit, circling the Earth three times. He received a distinguished service medal from then-president John F. Kennedy upon his return and was greeted by millions for a ticker-tape parade in New York City.
Glenn later became a Democratic senator from Ohio in 1974, holding office for 24 years, the longest-serving US senator in Ohio history. In 1978, he received the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, and was inducted in to the US Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1990. Despite his career as a senator, Glenn would return to space one last time in 1998 when, at age 77, he flew aboard the space shuttle Discovery – a mission that would see him become the oldest human being ever to go in to space.
“It still seems so vivid to me,” He said, on the 50th anniversary of his flight, in 2012. “I still can sort of pseudo-feel some of those same sensations I had back in those days during launch and all.”
Glenn died on Thursday, December 8th, at the James cancer hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He was 95.

Mystery object found on New Zealand beach
A shaggy object covered from top to bottom in barnacles has washed up on Muriwai Beach in Auckland. The bizarre spectacle was photographed by local resident Melissa Doubleday who posted it up on the Muriwai & Waimauku Area Community Group Facebook page to ask for second opinions.
“Just curious to know if anyone knows what this is??! Washed up on Muriwai Beach,” she wrote.
The image has since gone viral online with Internet users debating over what it could be. The suggestions so far have ranged from a washed up sea monster to a large piece of driftwood.
“I actually thought it was a washed up whale as I approached it, so weird,” said Doubleday. “It looks like worms with shells I’ve never seen before with these funny creatures just [coming] out.”

Mysterious and Frightening Real Cases of Demonic Possession
There has long been the belief across cultures that beyond the fringes of our known physical reality, lurking on the periphery of our vision and what we think we know, are enigmatic evil spirits, demons, and assorted spectral things beyond our comprehension wallowing in the dark. As scary and creepy as this idea may be, there is also the persistent belief that these apparitions on occasion push forth past the veil that separates our domains to invade not only our reality but also our bodies. For whatever inscrutable reasons or agendas, they seem covet our flesh forms and wish to penetrate within us and take control, dominate us, and own us. From beyond the wall that separates us from the world of demons they creep, and there at times seems to be very little we can do but try and fight them and the unknown powers they possess. Cases of demonic possession and our efforts to fight these sinister beings are numerous, coming from all over the world, and here I have put together a list of some of the creepier and well-known of these.
