Paranormal News of the Week
Scientists find life form that lives forever

A new study finds that hydra — spindly, freshwater polyps — can live seemingly forever, without aging. Unlike most multicellular species, hydra don’t show any signs of deteriorating with age, according to the new research published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. “I started my original experiment wanting to prove that hydra could not have escaped aging,” study researcher Daniel Martinez said in a statement. “My own data has proven me wrong — twice.”

Archaeological Evidence that the Aztecs had Zoos

One of the earliest examples of animals being kept in captivity was Moctezuma’s 14th century zoo at the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan. A recent PLOS ONE study, however, reveals evidence from the ruins of the Mexican city of Teotihuacan that may push back the date of captivating carnivores by 1000 years. During excavations from 1998-2004, the authors of this study found animal remains in chambers in the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. Visual examination of the animal skeletons suggested that some of the carnivores were kept in captivity. The authors found bone breaks and stress characteristic of captive animals – for example, three eagle skeletons showed stress on the lower part of the legs, where they may have been tied to a perch. Other deformities in the animal skeletons, such as bone fusion or abnormal growth, were evidence of infection, which typically only occur when animals are kept in close together in captivity.

Rare Footage Shows Live Giant Squid

The cephalopod was seen cruising Toyama Bay on Japan’s west coast, an area already known for its stunning firefly squid, which glow an iridescent blue and gather in the area to spawn. This squid, however, was an entirely different beast. Reports in Japanese say that the creature was filmed on December 24, seen by an underwater camera swimming near boat moorings. It was reportedly about 13 feet long and 3 feet around.

Boleskine House, former home of Aliester Crowley, destroyed by massive firefly

A historic manor house once owned by Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page and occultist Aleister Crowley has been devastated in a huge blaze. Boleskine House, in the Scottish Highlands, was reported on fire at around 1:40pm (local time) on December 23rd. Around 60% of the building was destroyed, but it was later established noone was inside. The famous guitarist bought the house at the height of Led Zeppelin’s fame in 1970 as a restoration project and a base for songwriting, but spent little time there and eventually sold it in 1992. It had since been used as a private residence and a guest house.

Skeptoid: Did the 1914 Christmas Truce Really Happen?

Every Christmas season, the media fills with heartwarming stories of holiday cheer. None is more ubiquitous than the famous 1914 Christmas Truce, the story of British and German soldiers in WWI who set their rifles aside and stepped out of the trenches for mutual good will. They sang Christmas carols and shared warm drinks, and even played a game of soccer. It’s the kind of story that we all want to hear so much that many of us never think to wonder how much truth there is behind it.
